Notes of Condolence

To: The family of Theresa Newhouse

It is with great sadness that we heard of Theresa's passing.

Theresa worked in our office at the B.C. Legislature, and always brought a ray of sunshine to work with her. Her wonderful sense of humour always cheered us, and her hard work and dedication always supported our efforts.

We will always remember her as the calm amid the storm, and the anchor which so often held us firm, while at the same time, by example she helped us realize the best part of people is the real part, and sometimes you just have to laugh.

On behalf of all of our staff, our best wishes and sympathies are today with Theresa's family and friends.

Dave Biro
Ministerial Assistant
Office of Hon. Gordon Wilson
Minister of Forests

Dear Mr. Newhouse,

We are writing to express our heartfelt sympathy to you and your family on the tragic death of your daughter, Theresa.

Theresa was well liked and respected by people in the legislature and, although we were not her personal friends, we do know that she was a bright, capable and motivated young woman. Her very premature death is an enormous loss to her fellow workers and friends here.

We are sure this is a most difficult time for all of you. Please know that we are just two among large numbers of people who are thinking of you and hoping the caring of family and friends will provide some comfort.

Sincerely,

Jan Pullinger, MLA
Cowichan-Ladysmith

Dale Lovick, MLA
Nanaimo

Dear John and Carol,

Judi and I were both shocked and saddened to hear of Theresa's death. Theresa was a fine individual who had a passion for life. Her contribution at our office was outstanding both in terms of her intellectual ability and also her wonderful sense of humour. The fact that Theresa was so young with so much potential makes her loss to us all the more tragic. She will be fondly remembered by all those who knew her. I know I will always remember her with fondness.

I am so sorry that I will be unable to attend the service arranged for Theresa but I am constrained by family matters that take me away from the Lower Mainland. I know that you were both very proud of your daughter. We are all better for having known her kindness, dedication to social justice, and commitment to her friends and family.

Our prayers and thoughts are with you both.

Gordon Wilson and Judi Tyabji

I was shocked and saddened to hear of the passing of Theresa Newhouse. My condolences to you, your family and her many friends. As a Victoria based activist and public affairs broadcaster with CFUV radio, I had many occassions to note Theresa's efforts on behalf of various causes. She was also extremely willing to assist me in several instances when I needed her help. During the Gustafsen Lake incident for instance she kept me supplied with daily press clippings which she had access to as Gordon Wilson's staff. Through Theresa, Wilson was made aware of some of the now disturbing aspects of official conduct in that matter and though he chose not to intervene, Theresa's attempt was duly noted and much appreciated. She will be much missed by many.

Again my sincerest condolences.

John Shafer

Dear Mr. and Mrs. Newhouse,

I am Gordon Wilson's executive assistant in the constituency, and wanted to let you know how sorry I am to hear about Theresa.

My contact with Theresa was mostly by phone, although I did meet her a few times during my trips to our Victoria office. I usually spoke to her several times a day.

I particularly remember Theresa's knowlege of constitutional matters, government and law. She was the person I turned to when I had questions of a broader nature that needed some expertise to answer.

I remember her speaking of her grandmother, and showing me a picture of herself with her grandmother and her brother.

Theresa accomplished so much in her life. She travelled to Europe and Asia, she studied political science, she went to law school, and she had this last holiday.

My thoughts are with you and your family at this time.

We knew Theresa in the years of her relationship with Leigh and since then. Karen and I are holding you in our hearts and thoughts and want you to know we will be thinking of you with love for years to come, knowing that the journey of letting a daughter and a sister go is a very long one. We feel deeply for your suffering. We are so joyful to have known Theresa in so many facets of her life and her being. She was truly one of the most intelligent, dear people I or Karen has ever known. May the knowledge that she lived her life with such integrity and intensity be of comfort to you in your mourning.
