We first met Theresa 10 years ago when she and Sarah Deleeuw stayed with us in Tlell in Haida Gwaii, working on a stream survey project with Tom. Theresa, and Sarah, worked like fiends all day inputting and analyzing the stream data. But in the late afternoon, they took time to go swimming. Although we both were scuba divers, we never considered swimming just for the fun of it. But Theresa's enthusiasm and sheer joy in playing in that very cold water brought us around, and the 4 of us soon had this as an afternoon ritual. One afternoon, she used the diving mask and found a coral-patterned sculpin, following it underwater for as long as she could stand the cold. It was a great surprise to find out that Theresa had a fear of water, of swimming. But snorkeling and later scuba diving were great interests for her. I don't think Theresa would let fear stand in the way of her pursuit of life. During that summer in Tlell and many times in Victoria, we shared exciting discussions and much laughter over lunches or tea.

Theresa and Tom had been on a dive at Saanich Inlet, and brought back a live jellyfish in a thermos of seawater. It stayed in our fridge until Tom could take it to the aquarium at the university. When Theresa found out that it was going to be examined by a physiologist, she said "I wouldn't have brought it back if I knew it was being used in an experiment." All living things had a right to exist and be treated humanely.

Theresa was having a cup of tea in our kitchen after a dive. We had just got a new logic game, and she wanted to try it. She mastered the beginner levels easily, and moved on to intermediate. Dinner was in the oven, and we asked her to stay. She said, no, she was expected for dinner at home, and would just try one more game, and leave. The time went by, the dinner was done, Carol was surely holding dinner for her at home, but Theresa couldn't resist the challenge of mastering yet one more level.... It was several hours later that she reluctantly put it aside. Of course, she reached an expert level in the game that neither of us has yet to achieve.
