This tall, sweet thing smiled at me across a room filled with anxious new law students. I was just as anxious and intimidated as my friends and family were so far away and I was beginning my new journey into law. Yet there stood this girl all smiles and cheer with all the confidence in the world. I instantly liked her. I described her to my partner that night as this wonderful person who made me feel right at home.
I learned very quickly that it was no accident that Theresa and I met. The next year I would have the opportunity to spend time with this sweet person and listen to her advise and insight. Theresa had a way of making all the rotten things that happen to a person in a day dissolve and become meaningless.
Theresa was such a smart whip. I remember sitting in criminal law as she asked the prof to explain how provocation criminal defenses may benefit society. I remember our prof smiling at Theresa and his earnest respect of her quick wit and response. He was unable to give her an answer that satisfied this socially minded feminist. I was so proud of her, I remember thinking, "that woman rocks, one day she will be one hell of a lawyer!"
I remember being partnered in the moot and watching her answer the most challenging questions with grace and charm. I remember her laughing as Mark gave his philosophical views into the world of crim law at the moot. It seemed to me that she had a natural ability to spar. Theresa was such an inspiring person. I feel like she took my hand and opened my eyes to a different way of thinking. I have never witnessed a person with so much love and respect for all. She was tolerant and cared for people with radically differing views. I have never seen such compassion and interest in people. I am so afraid I will never meet a person such as this ever again. Nimaskawisaan ( I am strong because of you) I have sought answers in an attempt to explain the injustice of losing my beloved friend. I can find none.
A common comment amongst friends concerning Theresa has been, "she was doing everything she ever dreamt of doing." I know this is true she was seeing the world with the man she loved. I believe Theresa would tell us that the onus is now on us to do the same.

One evening last year Theresa invited me into her humanities class she was leading. I watched Theresa welcome in the adult students and introduce them to the instructor and myself. The students had a deep respect and feeling of comfort in that class.
I remember thinking it must have been scary for these people to make the journey onto UVIC campus and how I bet all their fear disappated the moment they met Theresa. Her smiling, sparkling face with such warmth.
I remember feeling so proud of her and privileged to know her. I remember her handling the evening with confidence and humour. The students were excited by the evening topic and Theresa enjoyed their discussion and was sure to survey the entire group. She was an amazing woman.
I love you T,
Love, Renee
